Know the housing

Greater Boston wiring, decade by decade.

The age of a house tells us a lot before we open a single box. Here is what we find in the homes around Medford.

  1. 1900s–1930s

    Knob-and-tube

Two-families and triple-deckers across Medford, Somerville and Malden were wired with knob-and-tube: no ground, brittle insulation, often buried in attic insulation now.

  2. 1930s–1950s

    Cloth cable & fuses

Cloth-covered cable and 30- or 60-amp fuse boxes. Built for a few lights and a radio, not a kitchen full of appliances.

  3. 1950s–1970s

    Ungrounded & suspect panels

Two-prong outlets, early breaker panels, and some brands like Federal Pacific and Zinsco with poor safety records.

  4. Today

    Heat pumps & EVs

Heat pumps, induction ranges and EV chargers are asking 100-year-old services to carry more than ever. That starts with a load check.

What should I do if I smell burning from an outlet, switch or panel?

If you can do it safely, turn off the breaker for that circuit, or the main breaker, and then call an electrician. If you see smoke or flames, get everyone out and call 911.

Is knob-and-tube wiring still safe?

Knob-and-tube that is intact, unmodified and not buried in insulation can keep working, but after 80 to 100 years most of it is none of those things. It has no ground, its insulation gets brittle, and it was never designed for today’s loads.

How do I know if I need a panel upgrade?

Common signs are a fuse box or very old panel, no open breaker spaces, breakers that trip often, a 60- or 100-amp service with big new loads planned, or a panel brand with a known safety record.

What do I need to install a home EV charger?

Most homes use a Level 2 charger on a dedicated 240-volt circuit, sized to the charger and to what your service can carry. The first step is a load check of your panel.

Is it safe to plug a generator into my dryer outlet?

No. Backfeeding a house through an outlet with a “suicide cord” can electrocute utility workers and neighbors, damage the generator and start a fire. It is illegal and never safe.

How do I check that an electrician is licensed in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts electricians are licensed by the Board of State Examiners of Electricians, part of the state’s Division of Occupational Licensure. You can look up a license number on the state’s “Check a License” service on mass.gov.
