Electrician in Somerville, MA

Dense, old and constantly renovated: triple-deckers, condo conversions and the shops of Davis, Union and Ball Squares.

Somerville is next door to Medford and one of the densest cities in New England. Most of it is triple-deckers and two-families built more than a century ago, many of them now split into condos and renovated floor by floor.

Electrical work here is rarely simple. One building can have three meters, three panels, a house panel, wiring from four different decades and owners who all need the power on by Monday.

Three units, one building

A typical Somerville triple-decker has a meter and panel for each floor plus a house meter for the common areas. When one unit needs more capacity for a heat pump or an EV charger, it is worth looking at the whole meter bank and service, because that is what the utility will look at too.

Condo renovations

Condo conversions open walls, and open walls reveal old cable, overloaded circuits and creative splices from earlier work. We rewire while the walls are open, protect the finished floors in the other units, and keep the neighbors’ power on.

Squares and storefronts

Davis, Union, Ball, Teele and Magoun Squares are full of small businesses in old buildings. We do lighting, dedicated circuits and repairs for shops and offices, scheduled around the hours you are open.

Permits

Somerville electrical permits are filed by the licensed electrician with the city’s wiring inspector. We handle that, and the inspection, for the work we do.

All 35 answers
Can you upgrade just one unit in a Somerville triple-decker?

Often, yes, but it depends on the building’s service. Each unit panel is fed from the meter bank, and the total service has to carry all three units.

We check the whole service first, so you don’t pay for a unit upgrade the building can’t support. If the service needs work, we plan it with the other owners and the utility.

We’re converting a Somerville two-family to condos. What does the electrical side involve?

Usually a separate meter and panel for each unit, a house panel for shared lighting and equipment, and wiring that meets the current Massachusetts code wherever walls are opened.

Bring us in early, before the plans are final, so the panels, meters and circuits fit the layout and the inspection goes smoothly.

Do you work on Somerville storefronts and offices?

Yes. Fedoce Electric does commercial electrical work for offices and retail stores, including lighting, dedicated circuits, panel work and repairs.
